Hurricane Ida's Remnants Blamed for at Least 23 Deaths in NYC, New Jersey

At least 23 people died, including a New York City toddler, and tens of thousands were overwhelmed by floods as the remnants of Hurricane Ida devastated the tri-state area overnight with historic rainfall, at least one tornado and savage winds.

Nine of the confirmed fatalities were in two boroughs — a 2-year-old boy, 45-, 86- and 48-year-old women and 50- and 22-year-old men in Queens and a 66-year-old man in Brooklyn. Details on the ninth New York City victim, which Mayor Bill de Blasio confirmed at a mid-morning news briefing, weren’t immediately clear.

NYPD Commissioner said it appears all the New York City home deaths involved people who lived in basement apartments.

“Our hearts ache for the lives lost in last night’s storm. Please keep them and their loved ones in your thoughts today,” the mayor said Thursday. “They were our fellow New Yorkers and to their families, your city will be there for you in the days ahead.”

  3. 🌀 My Ida survival story 🌀
    Too late to evacuate,
Plus where would we all go?
In a short amount of time,
    What was a category 3 changed to a 4.
We tried to be prepared the best way we knew,
But no one could prepared for what we would all actually go through.
Beginning of it we were all okay,
Watching t.v as the winds made the trees sway.
    Than Ida became more aggressive,
Winds, rain, picking up speeds reckless.
Power went in out, kids became scared,
Son & youngest daughter, faces filled with tears,
Ceiling light fell, leaving pieces of debris to clean,
Leaving me & dad to take turns mopping up the leaks.
On top of the water from outside that began to creep,
From what had to be from all directions,
    In various different sections.
We managed & survived the hurricane,
Thankful we made it to see the next day.
Next day was sunny exposing the damage left,
With enough juice in my battery to text.
We are ok we made it, thank God for his grace,
Other Ida survivors texting back the same,
When will power be on, still left in the dark,
Even as I write this that question still has a question mark ❓
Looting & breakins every man for himself,
Leaving all stores close to home with nothing on their shelves.
Home feeling like a sauna, faces losing weight,
No hot meals, for us to put on our dinner plates.
Its crazy what you begin to miss when its all gone,
Just like you dont how strong you are until you gotta be strong.💪
    But strength comes with numbers,
Not gonna lie glad we had one another.
We lit candles and played card games,
Laughing at the funny jokes told, most lame.
After 3 days we finally had a warm meal thanks to pops,
Otherwise it was pb&j, can goods, water & soda pop.
Sis offered us to stay with her in the sunny state,
Offer I had no objective to take.
Gas was scarced, & the ones that had gas,
Lines were so long took 2 hrs to fill our tank.
But no complaints we made it,
Seeing my kids frowns turn to smiles,
Enjoying hot meals we didn't have in awhile.
Watching my 4 year old sleep peacefully,
Instead of her tossing & turning,
No more complaining about how her body was burning.
During the storm she was meditating,
Now she jumping in pool water with no hesitations,
These kids honestly are having, like a mini vacation,
Beyond grateful for my sisters act of kindness,
R.i.p to the lives that were lost, moment of silence 🙏

  4. The young woman that said they need help no FEMA no cars she is why this country is so messed up! This person is so dependent on the government so bad she can not conduct normal life activities with out government assistance! She expects entitlement.
When you have a democrat Governor what can you expect?
I feel for those that have lost loved ones and personal possessions.
    This is called life!

  5. All these people sending prayers, should actually do something instead of praying for a imaginary man in the sky. Climate change is real, and you think it's the second coming of christ. You people make me sick.

  6. Wow!! The south gets these storms all the time. 3 inches!! Thats just a regular storm. . Build better drainage!!! Voting on climate change and politicians cant fix it, but they want your $$$$ and votes.

  7. I really wish this new Governor could offer more than just empty words of love, condolences, and wishes for healing as support and come up with actual, real solutions or answers for these poor people affected. The people of New York deserve better.

  8. I live a block away from the Elizabeth Oakwood apartment complex and my street didn’t flood all my friends live there and those where my friends mothers on the new I feel so bad
